BIOGRAPHY

Amy Duncan, a pianist, composer and arranger living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, began her musical career in Newtown, Connecticut, USA at age 15, when she gave up her classical piano lessons and taught herself how to play jazz by listening to records and learning chords from a guitar chord book. By the time she was 16, she had joined the Musicians' Union and was gigging around the area and giving piano lessons.

Later on she moved to Manhattan, where she played in trios and quartets in various clubs around the city. After a few years she had an urge to put together a larger group as a vehicle for her writing and arranging, which she had taught herself with help from Count Basie saxophonist Frank Foster. She eventually settled on an unusual instrumentation that was mostly brass and included two euphoniums and a tuba. She called the band Brass Tacks, and they gigged around New York for a number of years, playing in clubs such as The Blue Note and The Knitting Factory. When she moved to Rio, she reformed the band with Brazilian musicians and they recorded the CD "My Joy."

Amy has also written and published her autobiography, Getting Down to Brass Tacks – My Adventures in the World of Jazz, Rio, and Beyond.

QUOTES

"The Brass Tacks recording, with ten compositions and arrangements by its leader, is one of the most pleasant surprises to appear in Brazil in the area of jazz during recent years." - Luiz Orlando Carneiro, Jornal do Brasil

"The band is daring in its repertoire, playing all original tunes written and arranged by Ms. Duncan. It's so difficult to hold an audience's attention with the program made up totally of unfamiliar tunes that most leaders don't take the risk. Duncan does -- and succeeds." - Leslie Gourse, The Christian Science Monitor

"Duncan, a small woman whose hands can barely stretch an octave ... is a cooking, inventive pianist." - Leonard Feather, Jazz Times
