Almost everyone in New Zealand knows Brooke Fraser as a singer/songwriter from Wellington whose debut album What To Do With Daylight catapulted her into the charts with four number one radio hits and sales exceeding seven times platinum.
Her second album Albertine is Brooke Fraser three years on from that - and we're not afraid to say that you can hear the difference.
It's the sound of Brooke having toured the world with her songs, playing shows as far afield as Japan, the USA and UK as well as her newly adopted home of Australia, where she relocated in 2004. It's the sound of her blossoming love affair with Africa (the album is named for an orphan in Rwanda with whom Brooke has a special bond), of passion for justice, authenticity and faith, and of hanging at her down-under base camp absorbing, reading, watching, talking, mulling over these things.
"One of things of which I'm most proud is that it would not be too much of a stretch to call this album 'live'. I'm thrilled at the way Marshall (Altman) steered the process, letting the music be what it was meant to be whilst pushing us all as players and reining us in where needed. The tracks you'll hear are not numerous individual session parts being layered over the top of one another by some mouse-clicker in an editing suite - it's me and my friends sitting in a room, making music and meaning what we're playing. Something pretty special happened in that studio which I think all of us were grateful to be a part of. The most appropriate word to describe the experience is 'divine'."
"Shadowfeet" is the lead single picked from the album. This song has the hallmarks that will see Albertine held up as remarkable album. Amazon.com remarks, “Immaculately crafted pop that is going to stand the test of time for all the right reasons.” We're happy to leave the rest to the music so take a listen now and whet your appetite for Albertine. « LESS DISCOGRAPHY |
BIOGRAPHYBrooke is the eldest of three children born to Bernie Fraser (an ex-rugby player) and his wife, Lynda. Brooke started taking piano lessons at an early age and continued until she was 17 years of age. She started writing songs at age twelve and taught herself the acoustic guitar at age fifteen. During the course of her late teen years, she was courted by major record companies.
In 2002, while Brooke was in Auckland, Brooke met with producer/manager Matty J and hired her as her manager. After considering five different label deals, Brooke signed a multi-album deal with Sony Music Entertainment New Zealand. Two albums later, Brooke’s label Wood and Bone has released Albertine, her sophomore effort, in the U.S. to rave reviews. The first single, Shadowfeet, is shooting up the charts as Brooke plays for sold out crowds across the U.S. and Canada.
After the success of her first album, Fraser moved to Sydney where she has lived ever since. Brooke is a member of Hillsong Church and the internationally renowned Hillsong United worship band for which she has written two wildly popular and best-selling hymns. Her performance of one of those hymns, “Hosanna”, has had over 1,400,000 views on YouTube. QUOTES"She may not be a household name in America (at least not yet), but New Zealander Brooke Fraser has thus far racked up four No. 1 radio hits. It’s a staggering résumé, indeed" - CMCentral.com (June 23, 2008)
"Brooke Fraser is not just a pretty voice... rather intelligent, delicately crafted songs about confusion and beauty and the heart’s longing... whose music incorporates a mixture of strength and fragility that is entirely engaging and endearing." - Willamette Week (June 4, 2008)
" ...It's a work of growing confidence and boldness and a deeper affair than the hit debut. It would seem that the good Brooke just got better." - Russell Baille, NZ Herald "A good songwriter can stir us within and move us without; Fraser does almost effortlessly" - Mike Alexander, Sunday Star Times "Brooke Fraser has outdone herself with 'Albertine'. Named for an orphaned Rwandan girl she met while visiting Africa, Albertine further proves what we already knew about Brooke: she knows how to write beautiful songs, she delivers them with absolute honesty, and she has a big heart." - Rip It Up Magazine |
